Saturday morning, an estimated two billion people worldwide tuned in to watch the royal wedding. If you live in the States or Canada – you had to be up early to catch the A-list invitees make their way to St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. If you lived on the west coast, you might as well not even have slept!
For the rest of the weekend and even into Monday, social media was abuzz about some of these guests. David Beckham had women from every continent swooning (we’re assumed at least one of the inhabitants of Antarctica swooned!), tennis superstar Serena Williams had everyone talking between her dress, her gorgeous Senegalese twists, and her adorable husband holding her hand throughout the wedding, and George and Amal Clooney were both picture-perfect for the royal event.
Other attendees included Oprah Winfrey, the entire cast of Suits, Elton John, Idris Elba, members of the Royal Family, and many other influential people. In total, 600 guests attended the ceremony and official reception, hosted by the Queen.

One obvious guest missing from the event was Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. As everyone knows, Princess Diana lost her life following a car accident when Prince Harry was 12 and Prince William was 15. However, both sons have carried on their mother’s humanitarian efforts all over the world through various charities.
Prince Harry was very close to his mom and wanted to honor her on his wedding day. One of the many ways he showed his love and respect for his late mother was by having her sister, Lady Jane Fellowes lovingly giving the reading during the ceremony.
But royal wedding watchers believed they saw another sign that Princess Diana was “taking part” in the ceremony. In the first row, to the right of Prince William, there was an empty seat at the chapel. Many viewers took to Facebook and Twitter to tearfully post about the touching tribute. Except, it wasn’t a touching tribute at all…
Many expressed that they were moved to tears after seeing the empty seat next to Prince William. However, the masses tweeting about this “loving gesture” mistook what it really was. Per royal protocol, the seat in front of the Queen is always left empty.
That’s not to say there weren’t other tributes to Princess Diana on Saturday; there were several. In addition to having Lady Jane Fellowes give the reading, Prince Harry handpicked forget-me-nots, his mother’s favorite flower, for his bride’s bouquet. During the ceremony, “Guide me, O Thy Great Redeemer” was sung, which was also one of the hymns sung at Princess Diana’s funeral.
