Family makes going through tough times a little bit easier. And they’re especially important to keep close when dealing with serious medical issues or diseases. Kids, in particular, thrive on the support of family and friends. But one 6-year-old boy named Zeke Puig found himself battling a devastating disease while separated from his brothers and sisters.
Zeke, from Phenix, Virginia, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia earlier this year, right before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of his diagnosis, Zeke has had to spend months in the hospital. And because of new COVID-19 restrictions, he’s been unable to visit with his three siblings.
During his chemotherapy and other treatments, Zeke is accompanied by his parents, John and Danielle Puig. But his three siblings, Elijah, Micah, and Noelle, are unallowed in the hospital for visits. Despite missing his siblings, Zeke manages to keep a smile on his face.
Danielle has been beyond impressed with how Zeke is handling life since his diagnosis. She told The Charlotte Gazette that he’s “one of our more sensitive kids, and we’ve been in awe of the strength, ease, and flexibility he has.” She continued admiring his strength, saying that “he has rarely ever complained.”
When Zeke goes home between treatments, he gets to play with Elijah, Noelle, and Micah. But sometimes he has to go weeks with minimal socially-distanced visits. After spending over 2 months straight in the hospital and away from his siblings, Zeke misses them more than ever. But he finally got to see them again!
John and Danielle arranged a surprise homecoming for Zeke. On September 3rd, 2020, they were at home with their children and “Grammy” and they told the kids and grandma to close their eyes. While the kids thought they were going to get surprise toys, the present they got was so much better.
John and Danielle finally told the kids to open their eyes and that’s when Zeke appeared! He ran to them and tackled one of his brothers in a giant hug. The heartwarming moment was captured on video. Check it out below:
While Zeke is currently out of the hospital, the past month has been a challenging one for his health and healing. You can follow along on his journey here.
