More and more women are opting to give birth in “natural environments” these days. For many of them, this means foregoing being under the care of a traditional OB-GYN and having a midwife or doula oversee their pregnancy and subsequent labor and delivery.
A lot of expectant mothers feel that going a more natural route – and yes, that means without the trusty epidural – give their baby a healthier delivery which is beneficial to the overall health of the child, both physically and mentally.
As such, an increased number of moms are participating in water births. This is a process where the mother is submerged in the warm water of a bathtub or jacuzzi during labor and either delivers the baby in the tub or outside on a dry surface.
According to AmericanPregancy.org: “The theory behind water birth is that since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother.”
Some women are taking a water birth to a whole new level and delivering their babies in the ocean. This may sound terrifying to some women out there, but one Russian woman did just this on a popular beach in Egypt while onlookers captured the birth on their cameras.
