Simone admits she spends around three hours painting her nails and that it takes her a full 90 minutes to remove the polish. In addition to two coats of base and one coat of top-coat, her routine consists using two coats of nail hardener and cuticle oil which helps them to stay strong. With her shortest nail measuring 11.8cm in length, it would be easy for them to break, splinter, or snap off, so she needs to keep the focus on the strength of them.
Strangely enough, Simone says she’s only broken one nail once since she started growing them in 2014 and that was a result of getting one of her fingers stuck in a fence gate. Ouch!
Simone says keeping them clean is also high on her list of priorities and that she keeps them hygienic by cleaning the undersides with a cotton swab daily. Her Instagram has increased in popularity and she’s even won awards for her beautiful nails.
However, she did have to teach herself how to re-write and type because of how long they grew. One thing she’s really struggled with is PE, as the teen says she can’t participate in classes for fear she’ll break a nail.
“I have exams at the moment and it’s hard to write, after one hour of writing my hands really hurt. On the computer, I have to type using my knuckles,” Simone explained. “Luckily, German schools don’t have dress codes, so they don’t cause any issues there.”
“PE is a huge problem, though,” she continued. “I can’t play volleyball, basketball or anything similar. My PE teachers are always trying to convince me to cut my nails. They’ll never succeed in convincing me – but that makes my grades in PE really bad.”
Despite everything – good and bad, she says she didn’t intend to grow them as long as they are but she’s gotten use to them and the attention.
“It wasn’t my intention to grow them so long, but as they grew, so did the amount of compliments and they became more and more a part of me,” Simone said. “During my first year, I always thought to myself, ‘I’m gonna cut them tomorrow,’ but I never did.”
