Mia Kang was one of these young women and she is speaking out about the dangers of anorexia. Mia has graced the pages of Vogue, Elle, and Bazaar Fashion and has been featured in print ads for Max Factor, Baskin Robins, Guess, and Guiseppe Zanotti.
She was about to do a photoshoot for the famed Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 2015 when she finally realized what she was doing to herself to achieve “perfection” wasn’t worth it.
Mia would starve herself for up to 10 days in advance of any shoot. On top of that, she was smoking a pack of day to keep herself from eating. She decided to make a change and it involved practicing Muay Thai. Because she needed to be stronger, she started eating more. She started gaining weight. Instead of going back to her old ways, the then 25-year-old let the weight gain happen naturally.
She started seeing curves and muscles and she loved every inch of her new body! She was more powerful and says, “I feel like I finally became a woman. I still have insecurities as I adjust into my new body, just like everyone else. But I know my body, respect it, and love it.”
Guess what? Not only is Mia still modeling, she’s also now a professional MMA fighter! She has never been happier and she hopes her story will encourage other women all over the world, saying, “We have one body and one life, don’t let your insecurities hold you back from happiness.”
