You may have seen a little bit more about Chloe Kim leading up to the Pyeongchang Games than you did Red Gerard. While Red was essentially a major underdog, Chloe’s story is a little different. Okay, it’s totally different!
Chloe’s parents emigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1982 – 18 years before she was born. Her dad is a proud U.S. citizen now and even called Chloe his “American Dream” on the TODAY Show, which is when everyone fell in love with Kim Jong-jin.
As far as Chloe, she was already a popular and talented snowboard star, who couldn’t compete in the Sochi Games in 2014 because of her age.

Chloe definitely did her dad and her country proud after her halfpipe run which ultimately sent her to the podium with a gold medal.
The 17-year-old is also a Twitter star, too. She commonly tweets during her competitions and after she won the gold was asked why. In typical teenage fashion, she replied, “Like, what else are you supposed to do?”

Chloe and Red are going to come home to a lot of fanfare as American heroes, then they’ll go back to taking out the trash before heading to class. Crazy, right?!
