Every once in a while, it’s important to be reminded of the sacrifices our men and women in the military make for our freedom, rights, and safety. Unless a member of our own family, a close friend, or significant other has served in the armed forces, it’s difficult to understand what it’s like to be without your husband, wife, mom, or dad for long stretches of time while they serve overseas. In the very worst case scenario, the loved one doesn’t come home at all.
Britt Harris sadly knows this feeling all too well. She married the love of her life, Chris, in a beautiful ceremony in October 2016. Chris was a member of the Army and served in the Airborne division. The young couple was enjoying being newlyweds when they found out that Chris was going to be deployed to Afghanistan.
One week after Chris found out that he and Britt were going to be parents, he was killed in an attack by a suicide bomber while serving in Afghanistan on August 2, 2017. Britt was six weeks along, shocked, and devastated by the sudden loss of her beloved husband.
After she received the news that her husband was killed, Britt shared her devastation on Instagram with her family and friends and wrote that Chris “will never be replaced.” In March 2018, she welcomed their daughter into the world and named her Christian after her dad.
