It cannot be said enough: There must be an end to bullying – whether it’s online or in person. Children are taught from a very young age that if they have nothing nice to say not to say anything at all. Schools across the United States promote bully-free zones and institute anti-bullying measures in elementary and middle schools. We hope when high school rolls around these kids have it in their heads that bullying another student is unacceptable and intolerable. We hope.
In college, young adults have enough on their plates to worry about what anyone else is doing or wearing and you rarely see cases of bullying. So, what happens to these same individuals that suddenly cause them to become despicable bullies as grown-ups?
To make matters worse, the number of adults that bully children online is shockingly high, especially when it comes to children with special needs or with rare illnesses. All those memes you see making fun of celebrities, webizens who posted an ill-advised photo to Instagram or Snapchat, or sick kids? The majority of them are created by adults. The question is why? Why do grown people feel the need to verbally attack children?
Sadly, we’ll probably never know the answer to that question. What we can do as human beings is show compassion and empathy for children who are born different. They didn’t ask to be brought into this world and their parents and loved ones are doing their best to make sure these kids are living their best life.
