Desperate Mom Pens Heartbreaking Letter Demanding Her Insurance Company Pays For A Transplant

Four years ago, Erika Zak and her husband Scott Powers were on top of the world. The couple had just had their first daughter Loïe and were looking forward to a lifetime of happiness and memories. They had no idea that “lifetime” would span four years. In 2014, Erika was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic colon cancer that had spread to her liver. She was 34.

The cancer was removed from Erika’s colon and she responded well to treatment. But last year, Erika underwent microwave ablation surgery to remove two tumors from her liver and the surgery went terribly wrong. She was left with a fist-sized hole in her liver and her bile ducts were destroyed.

Erika has been battling a failing liver ever since. She has been hospitalized 19 times over the course of 12 months. The high blood pressure in her liver backs up the veins in her esophagus and her surgical oncologist worries that Erika will develop an infection that will claim her life.

“Every time she calls me and has a fever and some bleeding, we all hold our breath, worried: Will this be the time Erika bleeds to death?” Dr. Skye Mayo, Erika’s surgical oncologist at Oregon Health & Science University told CNN. “This is kind of the end game of what liver failure looks like.” At 38.
