Over the last decade or so, there has been an increase in twins being born. There is some controversy among experts as to why the number has risen, but according to BabyCenter, twins account for three in 100 births in the U.S. as of 2013 data. That doesn’t sound like “a lot” but considering between 1980 and 2009, the birth rate for twins rose roughly 76-percent, it’s certainly a notable spike.
One of the assumptions for the increase in twin births is that women are waiting longer to have children, making their hormones and reproductive system more mature. There has also been an increase in fertility treatments among both men and women which could lead to the upswing.
Whatever the reason specifically is, you may be a mom or dad to multiples yourself or know someone who is and if so, you know that is isn’t just the number of buns in the oven that increases, of course, everything is doubled! This means double the strollers, car seats, cribs, diapers, bouncy seats, clothes, bottles, diapers, blankets, formula, bibs, pacifiers – did we mention diapers?!
Having twins can be a handful for both the parents and their bank account, but just like everything else that goes along with having twins, the rewards are doubled, too.Even if it’s your only pregnancy, your son or daughter will have a bestie for life. The sibling rivalry may be doubled too, but you can rest assured that someone will always have their back and they will never be bored. On that note, neither will you!
Sure, having twins will definitely keep you on your toes but you will also have twice the hugs, kisses, and laughs. One mom with twins posted a video of her adorable twin daughters, Alexis and Ava, and their conversation is basically #MomLifeWithMultiples.
The mom is trying to make her toddlers understand what being a twin means. Alexis answers it means “adorable” and honestly, she’s right. Mom explains that they have the same birthday, which they already knew, but their precious little faces turn to confusion when mom explains that Ava is one minute older than Alexis. After the initial shock wears off, Alexis nearly has a breakdown because “she wants to be bigger.” Mom patiently explains that older doesn’t mean bigger, as Ava tries to comfort her “lil sis.”
To prove her point, mom has the girls stand next to each other – and voila! It turns out that Alexis is actually slightly taller. Problem averted, right? Nope. Now Ava is upset she’s smaller. If you’ve ever wanted to know what having twins is like, the following video does a great job showing you.
